King, Joy - Sings Country

Country | Tennessee | 1978

1978 self-released LP by country singer and yodeler Joy King.

Joy King (1937-2016) was a country singer and renowned yodeler from Knoxville, Tennessee. In the 1950s and 1960s she traveled around playing on local barn dance shows and at coffeehouses in Tennessee and Florida. She recorded sparingly in the 1960s and 1970s, including a single "Taking Chances" backed with "Laughing Girl", which was recorded with members of the Nashville A-Team. She was a popular attraction in Gatlinburg during the 1960s. Joy also released a few LPs in her career: two with country singer Eddie Nash and the solo LP uploaded here. She played around Tennessee frequently until the 1990s, when an illness affected her voice.

Joy King passed away in 2016.

The liner notes of this LP were written by Archie Campbell. Personnel on the LP include Smokey White, David Johnson, Richard Benfield, Bon Berg, Denny McCoy, Jim Deal, Gerald Taylor, and Eddie Nash. Joy is credited with vocals, yodels, fiddle, and 12-string guitar. Harry Deal engineered the session at Galaxie III Studios in Taylorsville, North Carolina.

Most of the information I've included here was taken from the article "The Underappreciated Career of Folk Singer Joy King" published at www.knoxmercury.com, written by Eric Dawson.

The Kumusha Women's Marimba Ensemble is based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This cassette was recorded live in 2000at The Candyman in Santa Fe. Members of the ensemble featured in this performance include Tara Andrea, Katharina Becker, Karyna Cragin, Deb Dennison, Liz Hiebner, Janeen Maas, Liz Paterson, and Jacqueline Sharber.

As far as I can tell the Kumusha Women's Marimba Ensemble was active throughout the 2000s in Santa Fe and released at least one other CD in 2009.
